If you’re one of the millions of people currently working from home due to the COVID-19 lockdown, it’s worth taking a few minutes to think about remote working security. How secure is your device and your Wi-Fi connection?
The sudden shift to remote working means that many employees may now be accessing sensitive company data or company networks from home.
Yet new research frrom identity and access management specialist OneLogin has revealed that nearly one in five (17.4%) remote employees have shared their work device password with either their spouse or child, potentially exposing corporate data.
What’s more, over a third (36%) of global respondents have not changed their home Wi-Fi password in more than a year and 25% have never changed the password.
In the UK, 50% of respondents admitted that they had not changed their home Wi-Fi password in the last two years.
Changing your Wi-Fi password periodically is an essential part of keeping your network (and the devices that are on it) secure, OneLogin explained.
If you’re still using the default password written on your router, you should bear in mind that those passwords are well-known and easy to access by hackers, putting you at risk of someone potentially hijacking your network, locking you out of your router and accessing your device files.
“Organisations everywhere are facing unprecedented challenges as millions of people are working from home,” said Brad Brooks, CEO and president of OneLogin. “Passwords pose an even greater risk in this WFH environment and — as our study supports — are the weakest link in exposing businesses’ customers and data to bad actors.”
“This global remote work study shines the light on the importance of ensuring the right people are accessing internal and customer data at all times. It underscores the importance of protecting employees and their entire organisations, aligning with privacy and security best practices around the world,” Brooks added.
