The restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic have led to a surge in demand for better fixed lined and mobile infrastructure, new research shows.
In the past few months, millions of people have relied on broadband and mobile connectivity for work, entertainment and to keep in touch with friends and family.
Yet 49% of consumers have struggled with the speed of their broadband and 31% have struggled to find reliable mobile phone signals, NTT DATA UK found.
In fact, a third (33%) of consumers said they have felt ‘left behind’ during lockdown because they believe their internet connection isn’t good enough.
This period has raised expectations of fast internet, with two-thirds (67%) of consumers now expecting fast broadband and a good mobile phone signal going forward.
Household connectivity needs have also shifted as the nation looks at the possibility of remote working in the longer term.
For example, nearly half (47%) of respondents said they will rely on their smartphone for work and entertainment after lockdown, a 27% rise on pre-lockdown levels. And reliance on apps for face-to-face video conversations, such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams, is now at 43%, an increase of 48% compared to pre-lockdown.
The findings show how important reliable connectivity has been during lockdown — whether via mobile or broadband, commented Roei Haberman, head of Telco, Media and Technology at NTT DATA UK.
“Digital now supports all aspects of our lives,” Haberman said. “The surge in demand for high-bandwidth activities during lockdown looks set to continue in the transition back to a new normality.
“Telco companies need the resources in place so their networks can cope with this sustained level of demand on infrastructure moving forwards and maintain customer loyalty during this challenging time. This should sit alongside an even more rigorous focus on keeping communications and critical infrastructure reliable and secure for businesses and individuals alike.”
