Samsung reveals new foldable smartphones

Samsung has unveiled its highly anticipated new foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Galaxy Z Flip3 5G.
Available from 27 August, the latest generation devices feature a more durable and water resistant design and lower price point which Samsung hopes will encourage more users to make the switch.
The Galaxy Z Fold3 has a 7.6-inch flexible display that opens like a book and supports the S Pen stylus.
“S Pen support makes perfect sense on a screen of this size, and it was something that people were clamouring for with the first two Folds,” says TechRadar in a review of the new device. “There’s more writing and drawing real estate here than any Galaxy Note smartphone, yet it’s more convenient than a full-sized traditional tablet due to the fact that the Z Fold3 can be closed to half its open size and stuck in a pocket.”
Pricing starts at $1,799/£1,599 for a model with 256GB of storage, and if you want extra capacity you can get a 512GB Z Fold3 for $1,899/£1,699.
The flip-format Galaxy Z Flip3 comes with a larger, improved cover display and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate on the main display.
“It’s a more or less full-sized smartphone that folds in half,” TechRadar says.
The Galaxy Z Flip3 comes in a 128GB version, priced at $999/£949, and a 256GB model, which costs $1,049/£999.
Samsung is the clear leader when it comes to foldable smartphones. A new report from Counterpoint Research forecasts that the Korean company will have an 88% share of the global market by the end of this year.
The market remains niche, but overall shipments of foldable smartphones in 2021 are expected to reach around 9 million units, a 3x growth over 2020.
By 2023, Counterpoint Research expects a 10x growth in foldable smartphone shipments. But even with more manufacturers entering the market, Samsung is expected to continue dominating with a market share of nearly 75%.
