iPhone 13 was top-selling smartphone last year

Apple’s iPhone 13 was the best-selling smartphone of 2022, accounting for 28% of all iPhone sales, according to a new study.
Counterpoint Research’s Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker shows that the iPhone 13 was the number one smartphone in major markets including the UK, US, France, Germany and China. What’s more, it remained the top selling phone each month from its launch in September 2021 through to August 2022.
Price cuts after the launch of the iPhone 14 series further drove sales of the iPhone 13 in developing markets.
Worldwide, iPhone 13 sales in 2022 were double sales of the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the year’s second best-selling smartphone.
Counterpoint also reported that for the first time, a Pro Max variant of an iPhone series sold better than its Pro and base models in 2022, with the iPhone 14 Pro Max capturing the third spot in the 2022 list. It was the top-selling smartphone model for September, October and November of 2022.
Sales of the iPhone 14 Pro Max were led by early adopters and those upgrading to a higher iPhone variant, Counterpoint said. Major advancements in the iPhone 14 Pro series, such as dynamic island and faster processor, make it more attractive, as the base model is almost identical to the previous year’s model.
The iPhone 12, the best-selling smartphone of 2021, was the oldest model in the top 10 for 2022 with its sales holding up well in the US, Japan and China.
Overall, Apple captured eight spots in the top 10 list — the first brand to do so. The remaining two places were taken by Samsung with its entry-level models Galaxy A13 (in fourth place) and Galaxy A03 (the 10th best-selling model), the only LTE smartphones to make it to the list.
Adding up the sales of the entire top 10, they represented almost a fifth (19%) of the total global smartphone sales in 2022, the same as in 2021.
In 2023, Counterpoint expects the market share of the top 10 smartphones to increase as brands focus on clearing inventory and optimising their launches.
