6 key differences between the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max
Which iPhone to buy? Do you go with the slightly older, cheaper iPhone 12 Pro Max or the more recent, yet more expensive, iPhone 13 Pro Max?
Here are 6 key differences to help you decide between the two.
-
Smoother display
Both the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 13 Pro Max feature a 6.68-inch screen and a 2778 x 1284-pixel screen resolution. But when it comes to their refresh rates they differ substantially.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max boasts a significant upgrade in that it features a 120Hz refresh rate rather than the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s 60Hz refresh rate. The changes mean that the iPhone 13 Pro Max offers super-smooth scrolling and is much better at reducing motion blur – perfect for when you watch movies or play games on your iPhone.
On top of this, the ProMotion features included in the iPhone 13 Pro Max means the phone can regulate its refresh rate from 120Hz to 10Hz based on what you're using it for. This helps prevent high battery consumption where possible.
For example, while playing a cutting-edge online game might require a high refresh rate, if you’re just reading static text then your phone will drop the refresh rate and save on power.
Another useful display difference is that the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a typical peak brightness of 1,000 nits compared to the 800 nits for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This makes the newer model easier to use in bright conditions, such as during a sunny day on the beach.
If you do decide to take your iPhone to the beach when you’re on holiday, double check your iPhone 12 insurance covers you for travel. Here at Gadget Cover, policies can be extended to include use of your gadget anywhere in the world, up to 180 days in any one year.

Faster performance
Until the recent arrival of the iPhone 14 line of iPhones, the iPhone 13 Pro Max was the fastest iPhone ever made. But even now, when you look at its raw tech specs, it's clear the iPhone 13 Pro Max is still one of the most powerful smartphones in the world.
At the heart of the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the A15 Bionic chipset and a new 5-core GPU offering performance improvements compared to the older model. While the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s A14 Bionic chipset is fast, the A15 has set the bar even higher in terms of performance.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max’s 4-core GPU is also 30% slower than that in the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Although it’s probably only fair to say that in everyday life you probably won’t notice a huge difference in how these two phones run.
And while both models are compatible with the latest iOS 16 features, if you want to be future-proof then the newer phone will have the edge. But the iPhone 12 Pro Max is still a seriously impressive piece of kit.
-
Extra storage
Both of the iPhone models offer a RAM size of 6GB and a choice of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage capabilities, more than enough for gaming and other heavy users. However, the new phone also has a 1TB storage option for those with serious storage needs.
While most users won’t really need 1TB of storage, if you can afford the extra cost then it’s still well worth having. Again, investing in phones with more storage now, will probably pay off in the future.
-
Smarter cameras
Let’s be clear on this, as you would expect from Apple flagship phones both of these have excellent cameras. Even the pickiest of shutterbugs will be more than happy to be packing one of these in their bag this year.
However, while the headline specs seem very similar, the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s camera is in fact slightly superior. The iPhone 13 Pro Max uses a larger main sensor, is capable of a wider aperture on the main and ultrawide sensors, and has better image processing capabilities.
Apple claims the upgraded wide camera now captures up to 2.2x more light at night for both photos and videos, while the upgraded ultra-wide camera gets up to 92% more light. You’ll notice the benefits of these changes particularly in low-light conditions. Perfect for those who want to take professional videos.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max also offers better optical and digital zoom ranges compared to the 12 Pro Max.

Longer battery life
No matter what manufacturer, whenever we compare phones, battery life is always going to be a key battleground upon which to measure their rival claims for our hard-earned cash.
And when it comes to a fight between the iPhone 13 Pro Max and its older rival, there’s a clear winner.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max has a much better battery life than the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Delivering on average a 2.5-hour boost in battery life.
This is not only due to an increase in size from 3687mAh to 4352mAh but also because the iPhone 13 Pro Max has software and display features that optimise battery consumption.
Gadget testers love putting mobile phone batteries through their paces. In a recent PhoneArena battery test, the following scores were reached:
|
iPhone 13 Pro Max |
iPhone 12 Pro Max |
Video streaming |
10 hours 23 mins |
8 hours 37 mins |
Web browsing |
18 hours 52 mins |
14 hours 6 mins |
3D gaming |
10 hours 29 mins |
8 hours 1 min |
The iPhone 13 Pro Max’s performance was seriously impressive. And this is excellent news for anyone who is always on the go and needs a phone that can last longer between charges.
Finally, on the issue of charging, there is a slight uptick in the performance of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The iPhone 13 Pro Max offers fast charging at up to 27W, which is a little faster than the 22W on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
That said, most owners probably won’t actually take advantage of that faster charging. And they both still charge wirelessly through Qi at up to 7.5W or MagSafe at up to 15W.

Tweaked design
Looking at pictures of the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 13 Pro Max side by side, you could be forgiven for mixing them up. With the same industrial, flat-edged design they really didn’t break the mould when it came to the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
But there are some differences which could prove important. First off, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is slightly heavier and thicker than its predecessor – although an extra 12g in weight or 0.3mm in thickness probably isn’t a huge difference on an already large phone.
A more noticeable difference is the 20% reduction in the size of the notch. This provides a bit more screen real estate, but won’t make that much of a difference for most users.
If handset colours are very important to you then the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s new Sierra Blue and Alpine Green colourways are very attractive.
Fortunately, the build durability on both of these iPhones is excellent, featuring surgical-grade stainless steel, Apple’s Ceramic Shield toughened glass and an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.
While we don’t recommend putting this durability to the test, having iPhone 12 insurance from Gadget Cover means you’ll be covered against even minor screen cracks.
iPhone 12 Pro Max v iPhone 13 Pro Max – the Gadget Cover verdict
As you can see, if you want ‘the best’ phone then the iPhone 13 Pro Max will be the one for you. It has a much better battery, but also decent improvements to the camera, display, and processor. And if you’re prepared to pay extra, then there’s a whopping 1TB storage capacity, too.
That said, if you can find an iPhone 12 Pro Max then you’ll probably pay less and still be extremely happy with your purchase.
