How do you decide which laptop to buy? With so much choice there’s a lot to think about, including specs, price and brand.
Luckily, help is at hand. The annual Laptop Mag ‘Best Laptop Brands‘ report is designed to make choosing a laptop easier. Ranking all major laptop makers on a range of criteria, the report looks at factors such as performance, design, value, innovation, reviews and after-sales support.
This year’s report features some significant changes in the rankings. HP and Asus have moved up to take the top two places, while Razer moved up two places to sixth, boosted by its range of new laptops and improved tech support.
Meanwhile, Dell and Alienware stayed put in third and fourth place respectively.
Other well-known brands didn’t fare as well as you might expect. Lenovo dropped from the top spot to fifth place. And Apple – a brand many associate with quality – dropped three places to take this year’s 11th place. Not impressing the judges, Samsung retained its last place position.
HP’s success can be put down to its excellent laptops such as the Spectre x360 and its design innovation seen in the Spectre Folio. While HP did not do so well in terms of support and warranty, its reasonable prices helped boost its value rating and place it in the top spot.
Asus and Dell also did well in terms of value for money. But while they scored highly for design and innovation, they did not get as many good reviews as HP.
After two years in first place, lower review scores for Lenovo’s laptops are what led to the brand’s rankings drop this year, along with lower warranty and tech support scores.
The main reasons Apple only managed 10th place were its high prices, limited selection and lack of innovation. The brand also failed to impress with design.
